Filaments 12-20 (-40) µm wide, up to 2 mm long, often aggregating to form very dark films or mats, sometimes showing false branching. Sheath colorless or (usually) yellow-brown and lamellated. Cells 9-16 µm wide in main part of trichome, heterocysts intercalary and basal. Trichome tapers, often ending in long hair. Note: This morphospecies shares similarities with Calothrix confervicola Agardh ex Bornet et Flahault. Both species C. crustacea and C. confervicola are marine.
