Colonies microscopic, spherical, or rarely groupings of numerous cells. Mucilaginous envelopes colorless or yellowish, sometimes lamellated, distinct or diffuse at the margin. Cells at first spherical or oval, and later hemispherical or a segment of the sphere. The cells grey, blue-green, olive green, orange, or reddish violet and granular. A few planktonic species have gas vesicles. Cell division is by binary fission in three or more planes or irregular (in old colonies). Reproduction is by fragmentation of colonies.
